PROGRESSIVE CONTACT LENSES
Progressive contact lenses , also known as multifocal contact lenses , are an excellent solution for presbyopes who prefer to avoid wearing glasses. These lenses offer visual correction at multiple distances (far, intermediate and near) thanks to a special design that integrates different focus zones.
Types of progressive contact lenses:
-
Multifocal contact lenses with concentric design :
- In these lenses, the different correction powers are arranged in concentric rings around the center of the lens. Some versions have a center dedicated to distance vision, while others focus on near vision. Switching between zones allows for continuous focusing at different distances.
-
Aspheric multifocal contact lenses :
- These lenses have a gradual change in power from the center (for distance or near) to the periphery. This design helps make the transition between distances more natural than concentric designs.
-
Hybrid contact lenses :
- They combine a rigid center (which improves distance vision) with a soft peripheral part (which offers comfort and good near vision). They are useful for those who need clear vision in all conditions.
Advantages of progressive contact lenses:
- Convenience : No need to switch between distance glasses and near glasses, and they are not visible from the outside.
- Natural Vision : Unlike progressive glasses, progressive contact lenses do not limit the field of vision. The transition between near and far vision is smoother.
- Aesthetics : For those who prefer not to wear glasses, multifocal lenses represent a discreet and invisible solution.
Disadvantages:
- Adaptation : Some people may need some time to adjust to vision with progressive lenses. During this time, you may experience a slight blurring at certain distances.
- Vision quality : Although improved compared to the past, the vision quality may not be perfectly comparable to that provided by progressive glasses, especially in low light conditions.
Maintenance:
- Like all contact lenses, progressive lenses require proper maintenance to ensure comfort and eye health. There are daily versions (to be thrown away at the end of the day) and monthly versions (to be replaced every month), which must be cleaned regularly with special liquids.
Application protocol:
- Initial Trial : An in-store trial of progressive lenses to check comfort and vision quality before purchasing.
- Periodic checks : Regular checks to verify vision, support, dynamics and movement.
- Combination with glasses : Some presbyopes find it convenient to combine the use of progressive lenses with reading glasses for certain specific activities, such as prolonged reading.
